Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Lockheed Martin Quest®!
Please also be sure to review our Official Rules for each competition, as well as any site-specific rules provided on our Site List.
General Information
Is There Any Cost To Attend A Lockheed Martin QUEST® Event?
No! Code Quest®, Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®, and AI Quest are all free to attend, and always will be. Lunch is provided for everyone attending our in-person events. You are responsible for obtaining your own transportation to and from the event, as well as providing computers for the students to use during the event.
Who Can Attend These Events?
We welcome students in high school (grades 9-12) to participate in the event; in general, this refers to children from the ages of 13-18 who have not started a college program. Students attending an event (including our virtual events) must be accompanied by a responsible adult over the age of 18, usually a teacher.
Certain locations may permit the attendance of middle school students (grades 6-8), generally aged between 10-13; please see our Site List for more details, and our Consent Page for additional parental consent requirements.
Parents and other spectators are not permitted to attend our events, both due to the limited space available and security concerns. Students over the age of 18 are usually not eligible to attend our events.
I've Registered My Class For Code Quest® Academy Or Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® Academy; Are We Automatically Registered For Code Quest® Or Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®?
No; our Academy programs are separate from our competitions and have different registration requirements. Being registered for Code Quest® Academy mentoring sessions grants you access to early registration for the Code Quest® contest, and likewise for Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® Academy and Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®, but in both cases you still must complete registration for each student and team that will participate in the corresponding competition. Please also be aware that attendance at our competitions is often strictly limited due to physical space limitations, technical constraints, and/or volunteer availability (for both virtual and on-site events), so we may not be able to accomodate the attendance of your entire class at the competitions.
When Are The Events?
Please check our Site List for specific details; while most events of the same type (e.g. all Code Quest® events, all Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® events, etc.) are held on the same date, times can vary. Our competition locations outside of the US may also be held on different dates.
Can I Coach Teams At Both In-Person And Virtual Competitions?
Not for the same event. Coaches must be in attendance with their teams, so you won't be able to coach teams attending a virtual event (or another in-person location) while also accompanying teams to an in-person event. A second coach will need to register teams and students for the other location.
This also applies for multiple virtual competitions for the same event; we ask that schools choose a single virtual "location" to attend, in order to ensure we can support as many schools as possible.
You may register teams for separate locations for different events, however; for example, you may attend in-person forCode Quest®, but then compete virtually at Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®.
Are These Events Associated With Lockheed Martin?
Yes; Lockheed Martin is proud to host Code Quest®, Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®, and AI Quest. Our in-person events are generally hosted at Lockheed Martin facilities around the world, and are supported by volunteer Lockheed Martin employees. For more information about Lockheed Martin and how we host these events, please visit our other websites below:
Registration Process
When Does Registration Open And Close?
Registration schedules can vary from site to site, so check our Site List for specific details. You'll also be able to see the full timeline for each of your selected competition sites from your Coach Dashboard while logged in.
Please note that the first two weeks of registration for Code Quest® and Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® are priority registration periods for schools participating in the Code Quest® Academy and Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® Academy programs, respectively; teams from schools not participating in these programs will be waitlisted until the priority registration period ends, if space is available.
What Information Do I Need To Register (And Why)?
In order to complete registration for our events, you will be required to provide the following information:
- School name
- School address
- For yourself and any alternate coaches:
- Full name
- Phone number
- Email address
- Birthdate
- For each student:
- Full name
- Birthdate
Additionally, if attending a physical/in-person location, you will be required to provide the following information for each person (yourself, each alternate coach, and each student):
- Country of citizenship
- US Green Card number & expiration (for US permanent residents attending a US physical site)
- Passport number & country of issue (for persons attending a site in a country in which they are not a citizen)
- Country of birth (for persons attending a site in a country in which they are not a citizen)
In order to protect the privacy of yourself and your students, we aim to collect as little personal information as possible. However, Lockheed Martin is a national defense contractor, and as such must maintain a high level of security at all of our sites. As a result, our security office requires that we collect the birthdate and country of citizenship for each person attending any of our sites in-person. Foreign nationals will be required to disclose additional information regarding their passport or (if a US permanent resident attending a US site) their US Green Card. At a very few of our sites, foreign nationals may not be able to attend due to heightened security. If such a restriction exists, this will be highlighted as you complete the registration form.
Unfortunately we are unable to make any exceptions to these policies, and thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If providing this information presents difficulties or risks for you or your students, or one or more of you are unable to attend your local site due to nationality restrictions, we invite you to register instead at one of our virtual contest sites. Citizenship information is not collected for persons attending a virtual contest.
For more information about why we collect your information, how we protect it, and what your rights are with respect to that information, please see our Privacy Policy.
How Does The Registration Process Work?
When you log into your account for the first time, you will be required to create your 'coach profile', containing information about you, your school, and which site you would like to attend for each event. Once this is complete, you can register students and assign them to teams. Team registrations will then be reviewed by our volunteer team. Assuming all is well, you will then be asked to provide signed copies of any legal documents required at the site you are attending (such as photo releases, liability waivers, etc.) for each person. Once uploaded, these documents will also be reviewed by our volunteer team. Once all documents are received and approved, your team is ready to attend the event!
Throughout this process, you will receive emails to keep you updated about the status of each team, including if any corrections or updates are required. You can also continue to make updates to the information for yourself, your students, or their teams (however this information will likely be locked a few days before the event to allow us to make final preparations).
Can I Sign Legal Documents For My Students?
Most of our sites will require a set of legal documents - typically photo releases and liability waivers - that must be signed for each person attending the event. These documents may only be signed by persons age 18 and above; for students under the age of 18, they must be signed by the student's parent or legal guardian on the student's behalf. Coaches may not sign documents on behalf of students, unless the coach is that student's parent or legal guardian. Our volunteers will reject documents that do not appear to be correctly signed.
For a list of all legal documents required at each site, please visit our Legal Documents page.
Can We Decline To Sign Legal Documents?
No; all legal documents listed for a competition site are required, and must be completed by every member of a team (including any alternate coaches or students) for your registration to be completed. Teams that do not have all required documents submitted and approved by the posted deadline may not be permitted to attend the event.
If you or a member of your team has concerns about signing these documents, we recommend attending one of our virtual competitions instead; these sites do not require the collection of legal documents or citizenship information.
Why Was My Legal Document Rejected?
Any and all required legal documents must be signed by hand in blue or black ink (other fields can be pre-printed to help with legibility, but signatures must be hand-written). We cannot accept documents that:
- Are signed in a color of ink other than blue or black
- Are signed digitally, not by hand
- Bear a signature that does not resemble the signer's printed name
- Are dated after the date of the event
- Do not include a full date (day, month, and year)
How Do I Know If Our Registration Was Accepted?
You will receive automated emails about your team's status as the registration process proceeds. You may also view the current status of each of your teams while logged into the website on the Coach Dashboard. If your team has a 'Confirmed' status, that means that your registration is complete and you're ready to attend the competition!
Other team statuses mean that your registration is not yet complete:
- 'Pending' means your team was recently created or modified, and needs to be reviewed by our volunteer team.
- 'Corrections Needed' means there is an issue with your registration that must be corrected to proceed; please see the details provided by the volunteer team in your email and within the website.
- 'Documents Needed' means that your registration has been reviewed, but one or more team members (or alternates) is missing a legal document, which must be signed or uploaded.
- 'Document Review' means that our volunteer team needs to review those signed documents; once this is done, your team will be confirmed.
- If your team is listed as 'Withdrawn' or 'Rejected', this means either that you have removed the team from the competition or we were unable to accomodate your team for some reason. These statuses are rare.
If your team's status contains 'On Waitlist', that means that either you've registered more teams than we typically permit from a single school, or our site has reached capacity and can't accept further teams. If space becomes available, your team may be moved off the waitlist and invited to attend. Waitlisted teams are not able to attend the event.
The Virtual Competition Is Full; Can I Register At An In-Person Site Instead?
Possibly, yes; to switch your registration to an in-person site, you'll need to follow these steps:
- Withdraw all teams you have registered at the virtual site
- Edit your Coach Profile to select the in-person site you'd like to attend and provide your citizenship information
- Edit each of your alternate coaches and students to provide citizenship information
- Register the new teams
- Obtain signed legal forms for all participants and upload them to the website
Please note, however, that space is often more limited at our in-person locations; you may wish to reach out to our registration team first to confirm that space is still available.
Our In-Person Competition Is Full; Can I Register At Another In-Person Site Or A Virtual Competition Instead?
Possibly, yes; to switch your registration to another site, you'll need to follow these steps:
- Withdraw all teams you have registered at the in-person site
- Edit your Coach Profile to select the new site you'd like to attend
- Register the new teams
- If attending another in-person site, obtain new signed legal forms for all participants and upload them to the website
Our virtual locations often fill up quickly, so we can't guarantee that space will be available at the other site. Please also note that all legal documents are site-specific; you'll need to upload new signed copies of each document for each person. Additionally, if you switch to a virtual site, any provided citizenship information may be lost and will need to be re-entered if you switch back to an in-person location later.
I'm Not In The United States, Canada, Australia, or Singapore; Can I Still Participate In One Of Their Virtual Sites?
Unfortunately not. Privacy laws around the world are complicated, and our privacy office has only approved us to receive registrations originating from the same countries in which we host our events. Put more simply, to register for a US-based virtual event, you must be in the United States or Canada; to register for an APAC virtual event, you must be in Australia or Singapore. Teams outside of these locations will be rejected by our registration team. We are always working on finding ways to expand our competitions to new areas, though, so keep coming back for more information!
Attending Events
Can Alternate Students Or Coaches Attend?
Not usually; space is limited at our events, and we can only accomodate the primary members of each team. ForCode Quest®, this is limited to a maximum of three students per team; for Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®, up to five members per team. In both cases, only one coach may accompany all of their registered teams.
Alternate students may attend the event only if they are replacing a primary team member who is unable to attend at the last minute. If possible, please inform our registration team if such a substitution is required. An alternate student must have been previously registered as an alternate; unregistered students will not be permitted to attend.
Alternate coaches may only attend if substituting for the primary coach (as above), or if school policies require additional chaperones. Again, in either case, please let us know as soon as possible if an alternate coach needs to attend for either reason.
Is Food Provided At These Events?
Yes! A selection of options for both breakfast and lunch will be provided to all attendees for free at each of our in-person locations. If you have questions about what options will be available, please contact your site directly; catering options vary from site to site.
Can You Accomodate Dietary Restrictions?
Unfortunately not. As noted above, please contact your competition site's registration team directly if you have questions or concerns about the breakfast and lunch options that will be available, but we are unable to make any accomodations beyond those options.
What Can We Bring With Us? How Many Laptops? Notes? Textbooks?
Your team can bring at least one laptop; for each laptop you're allowed to bring, you may also bring an external monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse. Please note that some sites only allow a maximum of one laptop per team, and/or may have other restrictions in place; please refer to our Official Rules and our Site List for specific details.
Regardless of what site you attend, you may bring any number of textbooks and any amount of printed or handwritten notes along with you, and you may use these during the competition. You may not bring any pre-written digital code; any code you submit must be typed in by you during the contest. Please do NOT bring any electronic storage devices such as external hard drives or USB memory sticks; these are likely to be confiscated by Lockheed Martin corporate security.
What Do Coaches Do During The Event?
While the students are competing, coaches are invited to participate in Coach's Corner, which includes a series of roundtable discussions and similar activities intended to help better support your students. Discussion topics are likely to include how to assist students with preparing for a career in software engineering or cybersecurity, information about Lockheed Martin internships, and presentations from current and past interns about their work.
Coaches attending Code Quest® will also receive a Coach's Resource Packet, which contains walkthroughs, additional background information, and discussion topics for a selection of the problems used during the contest. These materials can be used as the basis for classroom lessons centered around these problems.
Can Spectators Attend The Event?
No. Space at our events is limited, and we can only accomodate team members and their coaches. All attendees must be registered through this website, and must be actively involved in the competition.
Competition Rules
What Are The Technical Requirements For The Competitions?
The technical requirements for each event can vary, and some locations have additional restrictions on what computers may be brought on-site due to security restrictions. Please refer to our Official Rules and our Site List for specific details.
Will We Have Access To The Internet During The Competition?
To participate in our competitions, you will need to bring a laptop computer that is capable of connecting to a wireless (WiFi) network. Internet access will be available from this network, however each competition does place restrictions on how the internet may be used during the contest (see below). For full details, please see our Official Rules.
For all of our competitions, the following are expressly prohibited and will result in immediate disqualification:
- The use of communication or streaming services (such as Discord, Twitch, TeamPlayer, etc.)
- The use of virtual machines not provided by Lockheed Martin
At Code Quest® events, we ask that you limit your use of the internet to looking up official documentation for your programming language or generic tutorials. Use of the following categories of sites is not permitted and may be grounds for disqualification:
- Code-sharing sites such as Gitlab
- Generative content services such as ChatGPT and other AI models (AI features built into IDEs should also be disabled; we know that many search engines now incorporate AI summaries by default, and ask that you ignore or disable these)
- Technical help sites or forums such as Reddit or Stack Overflow
At Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® events, most challenges are conducted within a virtual private network, which may have limited internet or network access. You will be able to access the internet when not connected to that VPN, however. While you may use AI platforms such as ChatGPT during the competition, you may not input Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST® challenge questions into an AI system; doing so may lead to disqualification.
Where Can I See Past Winners?
The top three teams at each competition location are listed on our official websites, linked below. Once there, click the "Past Quests" / "Past Cyber Quests" menu on the right side of the screen to select a particular year.
Internships
How Do I Apply For An LM Quest Internship?
Your coach should receive an email with an application and details about the internship a few weeks before the competition. In order to apply, you'll need to prepare a resume and submit it along with an online application. Review the internship and application information carefully, and make sure that your resume includes:
- Details of how you meet the basic qualifications for the internship
- Details of how you meet any desired qualifications for the internship, as applicable
- Which competition(s) you are planning to attend; attendance will be verified and is a requirement
After the competitions, our team of hiring managers will review the applications we've received, and will reach out to a selection of applicants for interviews. This process can take some time, but we'll make sure to respond to everyone.
Can I Apply For An Internship If I'm Not A US Citizen Or Live Outside The United States?
Sorry, no. All internships are based in the US, and applicants must be US citizens who physically reside in the United States.
How Old Do I Have To Be In Order To Apply For A Quest High School Internship?
Applicants must meet the age requirement of 16 years or older at the commencement of employment (typically early June).
Is Participation In A Competition Required For Internships?
Yes. LM Quest internships are only available to participants in one of our Code Quest®, Lockheed Martin CYBERQUEST®, or AI Quest competitions (either in-person or virtual). Please be sure to note your participation (and at what location you participated) on your resume; attendance at the competition will be verified.
Do I Need To Win A Competition To Get An Internship?
No! Your team's performance in the competition(s) is not a factor in the hiring process. You do need to attend a competition (see above), but it doesn't matter how many points you earn or where you place.
I'm A High School Senior, And Attending College In The Fall. Can I Still Apply?
Yes! This isn't a problem, and your manager can help you arrange your schedule to accomodate any orientation events you may be expected to attend.
I Have A Vacation Scheduled; Can I Take Time Off During The Internship?
Yes, this should be fine. If your vacation is expected to be more than a few weeks, it might be good to mention this in your interview; however, your manager can work with you to ensure that you can take the time you need.
Are There Other Internship Opportunities Available?
Not through LM Quest, however Lockheed Martin does offer several other internships to high school and college students. Check out Lockheed Martin's Internship Page for more details and to apply.
